Workshop on Declining Child Sex Ratio

The Workshop started with a welcome address by the Tmt.Amuthavalli,I.A.S.,  Director of Social Welfare,  Tmt.Jaya,I.A.S., Joint Secretary, Municipal Administration & Water Supply Department, Dr.Darez Ahamed,I.A.S.,  Mission Director, National Health Mission,  Thiru.Kannan,I.A.S., Mission Director, Integrated Child Development Services and several other senior officials from Health Department, Social Defence Department, Women Development Corporation, Chennai Corporation and field officers from Social Welfare Department and Integrated Child Development  Services participated in the Workshop.

        To begin with the Director of Social Welfare made a presentation on the Declining Child  Sex Ratio in Tamil Nadu and stated that though the ideal CSR was 950/1000 the NFHS-4 Data revealed alarming truth about the drastic decline in CSR in certain Districts like Madurai for example where the CSR is 765/1000 in Rural areas and  705/1000 in Urban areas and Cuddalore District reporting 957/1000.  The Director of Social Welfare also expressed her concern on the decline of CSR in the districts like Ariyalur, Ramnad, Krishnagiri and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu.  The Director said that though many programmes like BBBP and  Special initiatives  to reduce Child Marriages and enforcement on PNPCD Act  have been taken,  a lot has to be done to improve the Child Sex Ratio in the districts in Tamil Nadu.  The Director of Social Welfare invited the participants to express their views and give suggestions to bring about effective convergence in the related departments to address this issue.

Many recommendations emerged in the Work Shop. The Workshop concluded in a positive note with the participants ensuring co-operation in dealing with the issues and assured that necesssary steps will be taken to provide training for the officials and field functionaries in ICDS and strengthening convergence with other Departments.
